Vicar Jake tagged Pastor Tim last time in his REAL LIFE blog post. However, I jumped in the way and took that tag! There are just a handful of months left before my family and I head back to the seminary in St. Louis in July. Thank you for all the opportunities to live life with you!
Life is something we can highlight on Facebook, sneak behind a smile on certain days, but the real life is something that is not always shared. Thanks Vicar Jake for setting the tone and encouraging those in the church to show a little of what they do in real life!
REAL LIFE: DATE NIGHTS / LEISURE ACTIVITIES
MICHELLE AND I:
Michelle and I love food. We keep trying to think of other things to do in Arizona, and we have a couple times, but usually we head out to dine somewhere. So far we have explored from Downtown Gilbert to Mill Avenue and found many wonderful places! Gelato in San Tan, BBQ in Gilbert, a little Irish Pub on Mill Avenue – all wonderful experiences during our time in Arizona!
Since leaving California, I have missed the ocean and surfing. There really isn’t anything that replaces that exactly! Hiking, though, is another activity that our family has enjoyed. Well, most of our family anyway! Gavin has certainly taken to it, and I love leading him along trails. We headed out to Usery Mountain not long ago and enjoyed venturing through God’s creation.
REAL LIFE: BOOKS
To be truthful, I’m not much of a reader! I know that may seem strange for someone who is training to be a pastor, but it’s true! I’d much rather watch a movie, have a conversation with someone, or go create something. I have learned so very much from spending time in conversation over a beer or coffee with people! What I have been working through, though, is:
THE GREAT DIVORCE: C.S. Lewis
Lewis wrote this book as a response to another book of his time. The Great Divorce is full of imagery as he tries to depict what it might look and feel like for those beyond the life we see now. Lewis is not necessarily trying to depict the biblical descriptions of Heaven and Hell, but using them as influences as he writes his story. Really interesting!
REAL LIFE: CURRENTLY WATCHING
Michelle and I have few TV shows that we follow, but we consistently watch this one together with the kids! The talent God gives certain people to sing is absolutely amazing. We enjoy hearing the stories of the people who sing, see what inspires them, and hear their emotion through song!
REAL LIFE: HOBBIES / MUSIC
DIRT: From four-wheelers to hotrods, I have enjoyed them all. Gavin and I had an opportunity to head out on the trail with Steve Ehrman and crew with the Jeepers of CGLC. It was awesome! 8 hours out on the trails exploring the beauty of the desert.
STREET: My brother-in-law and I are currently wiring a ‘27 T-Bucket in his garage. Tinkering on cars has been a great outlet for me as we work together on this project. Seeing a car come to life piece by piece is a pretty amazing experience! I hope that we finish it before our family heads back to St. Louis in July. You’ll know if it’s done when you see it in the church parking lot!
Any opportunity I have to hear live music is an opportunity that I cannot pass up. Unfortunately, this hasn’t come up too much in AZ! I love hearing Blues and Jazz artists in some hole-in-the-wall place where they pour a nice Manhattan. Live music is something so different than hearing something over the radio, or through a set of ear-buds. There’s life and feeling. You feel the music as it moves through the air. You see the faces and body language of the artists as they play. You see how they interact with each other and the crowd. There’s just something about hearing impromptu blues and Jazz riffs in a dimly lit room somewhere…
REAL LIFE: DEVOTIONAL
IGNITE YOUR FAITH – GET BACK IN THE FIGHT, A 40 DAY DEVOTIONAL by Tim Clinton and Max Davis:
I second this one that Vicar Jake posted! Erick handed me this devotional one morning as we sat over coffee. I have thoroughly enjoyed each devotion as an encouragement to live life as the man that God has called me to be. Fight for God, fight for love, fight for truth.
NOT A FAN: daily devotional.
Kyle Idleman writes about moving from a fanatic of Jesus Christ to a follower of Jesus Christ. The book moves through 25 days of following, denying, and pursuing. This isn’t a book that would move someone from unbelief to belief, but rather strengthen the Christian life of a believer!
