Real Life : Tim Ahlman

August 29, 2017

BY: Pastor Tim Ahlman

I am a normal guy. No, seriously, I am. I have a real life outside of being a pastor. This real life is actually what allows me to serve, lead and love as one of your pastors at CGLCS. I truly lead out of the overflow of a real life that is quite full.  It is a privilege to be “Pastor Tim.” It is also a privilege to simply be known by many as “Tim.”

REAL LIFE: DATES / LEISURE ACTIVITIES

BREAKFAST DATE:

I love grabbing breakfast with Alexa at The Coffee Shop in Agritopia on Friday mornings (my day off), after we drop the kids off for school. I don’t drink coffee daily, but Alexa has introduced me to a delightful Chai Tea Latte. It is a treat. I love these mornings of simply resting, shutting off my “work brain” and listening deeply to what is going on in my wife’s world.

THE DESERT BOTANIC GARDENS:

We have been members at the Desert Botanic Gardens for a couple years. It is an extraordinary place. Their collection of cactus and succulents amazes me. I love going there with my kids and re-discovering the awe and wonder at the Creator’s incredible creation.

REAL LIFE: LEADERSHIP BOOKS

LEFT TO TELL

Book by Immaculée Ilibagiza

This is the story of a survivor of the Rwandan genocide of the early 1990s. Our leadership staff heard her speak at the Global Leadership Summit a few weeks ago. Immaculee survived for 3 months hiding with 6 other women in a 3 by 4 foot hidden bathroom. Both of her parents and two brothers were killed in the genocide, along with 1 million other Tutsi Rwandans. Immaculee discovered the power of prayer and forgiveness for her enemies. I highly recommend this book. You will be amazed at her resilience and spirit.

LEADERSHIP AND SELF DECEPTION

Book by Arbinger Institute

Are you an “in the box” or “out of the box” leader? Do you believe everything you think and feel? Don’t. You may be blind to your true motivations and unwittingly sabotage what God wants to do in your life. All of us move in and out of “the box” over and over again in our lives. It’s best to stay out. This is a leadership book I read once a year. That time of the year has come. This book is an easy-to-read leadership fable whose truths are deeply entrenched in the way of Jesus.

REAL LIFE: CURRENTLY WATCHING

THE FLASH – NETFLIX

No, I’m not binge watching it. But…we currently do watch one episode every other day. Who am I kidding – we watch one (or two) a night. Don’t judge. It’s late and I’m tired and the Flash makes me feel better about myself. He makes way more mistakes than I do. If you’re looking for a relatively “family-friendly” superhero show this is a good one (it is probably okay for 11 years and up).

THE COLORADO ROCKIES:

After watching The Flash I speed through every Rockies game. Newsflash – the Rockies are in a tight wild card playoff race with the Diamondbacks. The Rockies normally stink, so this is a big deal. I record the game and watch it in 30 minutes after it is completed. One of the cruelest things you could ever do is tell me the “live” score of a Colorado sport’s team. I rarely watch sports live. I still yell like it is, though. Yelling at the TV makes me feel better.

REAL LIFE: HOBBIES

GOLF:

Duh. I’ve talked about it plenty over the years. Honestly, the golf course is where I can simply be “Tim.” I golf with the same 12-20 guys every Friday. They are fantastic golfers and we have become friends. I am humbled to rejoice with them in the “highs,” and pray for them in the “lows.” We are a community.

HORTICULTURE:

I love taking care of my yard. I love mowing my grass really short, almost simulating a golf fairway. It is a weird pursuit, I know. I love God’s creation. There are restorative powers found in God’s creation. My backyard is my “sanctuary” in the broad sense of the word.

REAL LIFE: DEVOTIONAL

PRAY AS YOU GO APP

Every morning for me starts with drinking water, taking my vitamins, push-ups, planks and riding my stationary bike. I also listen to a daily 12 minute devotion on the “Pray as You Go” app. It is a free app produced by Jesuits from England. They all have accents that make me feel extra holy. Seriously, it is a great way to start the day!
