Christ-like Servant Leadership
Is it January already? It seems like it was just Halloween and Thanksgiving! Advent and Christmas were a joyous celebration of waiting for and celebrating the Savior’s birth. Over 2,100 people joined us to praise and worship Jesus on Christmas Eve! Wow! That’s incredible! Christ’s Greenfield, we have an influence in our community and we have such an incredible opportunity to show them who Jesus is, how He loves us, and how we can serve others in His name.
As some of you may know, since September 2016, I’ve been a part of a continuing education program in the LCMS, specifically designed for DCE’s and other commissioned ministers, to grow in their leadership skills, self-care and personal spiritual disciplines, with a special emphasis on coaching. KINDLE (Karpenko Institute for Nurturing and Developing Leadership Excellence) has been world-changing for me. It has helped me learn how to create and cast vision, serve more intentionally using my gifts, and reiterated in my heart why I went into ministry in the first place. Some of you have been to the Servant Leader Workshops, Faith at Home Workshop and been a part of Bible study clusters with me during this journey. It’s actually part of what inspired me to pursue creating a Faith Milestone program here at CGLC (more on that soon!).
During this next and final chapter of the program, I get the opportunity to lead 3 more Bible study clusters, with an apprentice leader then leading their own! If you are interested in becoming a cluster apprentice, please let me know! High school students (or anyone really!!), join me on Sunday afternoons, 12:00-2:00 p.m. in the youth room as we dive deep into God’s Word on topics like faith, spiritual disciplines, goals, and servant leadership.
When I think of what it means to be a Christ-like servant leader, I instantly think of that moment when Jesus is washing His disciples feet. He humbles Himself like a servant. At first, Peter didn’t like that He was doing that, but then he wanted Him to bathe his whole body, not just his feet. Jesus’ response to their confusion is just beautiful in John 13: 12-16, “When He had washed their feet and put on His outer garments and resumed His place, He said to them, ‘Do you understand what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.’”
I love that Jesus tells them that He has given them an example, someone they should follow with their actions. Jesus wasn’t simply someone to admire, or sit at his feet and learn from His sermons. Jesus was someone to learn from His actions, someone to emulate and model your behavior, relationships and life after. One of my favorite servant leader practices is just that: “Set the Example: Behave in ways consistent with that of a Christ-like servant leader.” When you live like Jesus, so much happens: You begin to grasp the significance of your impact on others, you lead with calm clarity, acting with integrity and staying connected to others. This attitude shift happens as you accept and imitate the values inherent with how Jesus led His life. Even in His death Jesus was living like a servant: He humbled himself even to death upon a cross, so that those He loved (you and me) could have a beautiful and rich inheritance: eternity with Him!
As we learn from the example that Jesus set, may we also set an example for others of true servant leadership. May our knowledge, words, actions and attitudes reflect true Christ-like servant leadership at all times, in all places so that we can step out in faith to reach the lost.
If you’d like more information on my KINDLE Servant Leadership journey, or want to be a part of the next phase of Servant Leader Workshops or Bible Study Clusters, please do not hesitate to ask! I’d love to have you along for the journey and encourage you on your own faith journey with Jesus. Also, check out KINDLE for more info! I’ll be going to Chicago at the end of this month for my fourth round of week-long classes. Pray for safe travel, that God would open my eyes to how I can use what I learn here at Christ’s Greenfield, and that I stay warm! Blessings as you seek ways to be a Christ-like servant leader!
